Below are a few of the common issues and concerns that parents may have about their children during primary school life. As a school we are experienced in dealing with these issues and welcome parents to approach us to discuss any school or parenting matter that is on their mind.

Not wanting to go to school
This can show itself in a number of different ways including a reluctance e.g. a reluctance to go to school, feigning illness, anxiety causing illness. Talk to your child to try to ascertain if there are any problems or worries. If there is a problem at school please speak to the class teacher.
Friendships & Bullying
It is not unusual for parents to have concerns at some stage about their child’s friendships or possible bullying issues. Children can come home reporting unkind words from a friend, being left out or squabbles and may be upset. More often than not, with a positive supportive chat at home, you will find the issue does not arise again the following day and friendships resume naturally.
However, if you feel your child is experiencing upset which is not a fleeting issue or they continue to be upset and anxious then please do speak to your class teacher. Our teachers are very used to resolving friendship issues and will be glad to help you.

If you feel your child’s problems are more than an occasional unkindness and may be of a bullying nature please chat to your class teacher and also read our anti-bullying policy and general complaints policy to get an insight into how our school tackles bullying problems.
Health and safety of my child at school
Playtimes – we believe in adventurous play which benefits the children, allowing them to learn about taking risks within a safe environment..
We have a playground charter which our children have been involved in building.
This is a time when the children can run, jump, play in the wooded area and use our climbing frames. All allowable play has been considered to be safe for the age of our children and there are rules about fighting, playing with sticks and climbing trees. If you feel your child has been in a situation which falls outside of safe play or if you are concerned with the games that the children are playing then please contact your class teacher.
Parents can be very useful in highlighting games/activities gaining popularity which we can then consider for guidance and discuss in assemblies.
Trained first aid staff are always on premises and additional training is arranged for support of children with specific illnesses as they emerge.
Learning progress – at school and at home
Our school has systems in place which are used to set learning targets and track childrens’ progress. Teachers can quickly spot if a child is falling behind. Your teacher would highlight this during parent meetings.
If you feel your child is struggling with set homework, or simply refuses to engage then please let your teacher know. You can write a note to return with homework tasks or request a meeting (see FAQs)
Child neglect or possible safety and abuse concerns
If you have any concerns that a child within the school could possibly be suffering from neglect or may be in an unsafe environment then we ask that you discuss this, in confidence, with The Head Teacher who is the designated safeguarding lead. It is advisable to speak only to the school, and not with other parents about your concerns in order to uphold the privacy of the child and other affected parties. Our teaching and support staff follow legal and council-based procedures for referring concerns.

My Childs eating habits and diet
A common for concern for when children start school is ‘Does my child eat the school meals they are served and do they drink enough during the day?’
Our dinner staff serve food onto plates for all children having school dinners. This ensures that children are given appropriate variety and quantity. The children sit with their year group and are supervised to eat their meal, with assistance provide to help cut up the food. Children are encouraged to clear their plate but this is not mandatory.
We are able to cater for most diets e.g. vegetarian, gluten free. Please speak to the school office if your child’s has any dietary requirements especially if this is due to an allergy or medical condition.

All children are requested to bring in a bottle of water each day – this is available within the classroom. Water can be refilled during break times.
If your concerns extend to their diet or eating habits at home – such as refusal to eat, over eating, exceptional fussiness – then we may suggest you discuss your concerns with our school nurse. Speak to the school office or contact her directly to arrange an appointment
My Childs health and illness
Other than the usual snuffles and colds, which your child will get, if you have any concerns about your child’s general health, recurring illness, possible allergies and food intolerances we advise you to first speak to your GP. Please do keep us informed of any changes in your child’s health status.
The ‘Nine ‘O’ Clock headache or tummy ache can be a complaint from children and may signal possible excitement or anxiety about school even if they cannot identify that themselves. It is worth chatting to your child to try and find out if there is anything troubling them. And please let the teacher know so they can monitor your child’s behaviour during the school day. Sleep and bedwetting concerns
Young children can be extremely tired once they start full school days and may need to change to earlier bedtimes to cope with their busy days.
It is quite common for children to revert to occasional bedwetting as they start school. The excitement, long days and change in drinking habits can all have an effect. This usually settles down during the reception year.
If sleep issues – lack of sleep, being too tired or ongoing bedwetting are a concern then advice and support is on hand from our School nurse
Family separation, divorce and bereavement
Please speak to us in confidence about changes in your family life which your children may find upsetting. We can then best support your child through difficult times and keep any eye on their general mood and learning progress .
The school can arrange for child counselling where appropriate.
Please speak, in confidence, to the Headteacher if the paying for school uniform, dinner money, club or trip fees are problem. In the event of financial hardship, where purchasing items becomes problematic, discreet support may be possible by arrangement. Please contact the school to make an appointment.
Behavioural and anxiety concerns
If you are concerned about ongoing behavioural issues or child anxiousness then it is useful to highlight this to your child’s teacher. They may have some strategies to help support you and will be able to indicate if your child shows similar signs at school. Mobile phone and computer usage

Pupils are asked to not bring mobile phones or personal computers in to School but if parents request phones are carried for a specific purpose then the phone has to be handed in to the school office during the day.
At home Children may be able to access the internet and social media not just through the obvious computers and I-Pads but through their Kindles in the form of texts and old hand-me-down phones with no SIM card. Even children’s watches now have texting capability. So be aware of what and how your child can access the outside world.

I have a complaint/concern about a member of school staff – what do I do?
You can make an appointment to discuss this with the head teacher. If your complaint is about the headteacher please contact the Chair of Governors – the school office will put you in contact.

I am worried I am being a needy parent who is pestering the school with my concerns
You would not the first parent to think this. Please do not let this put you off speaking to the school about your child. We would rather know and deal with any problems, however small or frequent, to put your mind at rest and ensure your child is comfortable and happy at school.
Travelling safely to and from school
Our safer routes to school team have established a number of guidelines to prioritise our children travelling safely to school.
Park in the George Carpark if you drive to school. There is free parking here for standard school drop off and pick up times.
The established ‘School Safe Zone’ means no parking outside of the school on Tyning lane, no driving along Tyning Lane to turn round ( it is now mostly double yellow lines here) and no parking in Church Lane

At the end of the school day KS1 children (Reception and classes 1,2,3) will leave the school with supervision from the class staff. The staff will expect to see the adult who is collecting them then release the child to leave.
When children move into KS2 they are allowed to leave the school on their own.
