School meals are prepared and supplied from a centralised hub kitchen. Special diets can be catered for and we encourage parents to inform the school lunch company on specialdiets@edwardsand ward.co.uk about any food allergies or special dietary requirements. Freshly baked bread, fresh fruit , yoghurts and drinking water are available daily. Lunches are organised in two sittings.
Since September 2014, under government legislation, all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 have been able to have free school meals if they wish to under the “universal infant free school meals” scheme. The parents of older children, if they are on a low income, are encouraged to apply to the Local Authority for free school meals. However, it is also worth knowing that families on a low income with younger children, who would qualify for the universal free school meals anyway, will also trigger supplementary funding for their child in school if they apply for free school meals on a need basis. This will mean that they could receive help with other paid-for items such as school trips. Please do ask the School Office about this. All enquiries are handled in a discreet, confidential and friendly manner.
Dinner money must be paid weekly or termly, in advance of booking. The current cost of a school meal is £2.60. Children are served lunches in the same way and at the same time as the rest of their year group whether they receive free meals or not.
Children may bring a packed lunch in a suitable lunch box, which should also include a cold drink. We encourage parents to provide a healthy balanced lunch. Glass containers, cans and hot drinks are not allowed for safety reasons.
An annual donation is requested from parents of children who eat sandwiches towards the cost of managing the dining hall.
Under the Healthy Schools scheme, the school has a water cooler which filters water from the mains supply. This is where children can fill their water bottles. Children keep their water bottles on their desks during the school day and are encouraged to drink during lessons. We no longer provide plastic cups to help protect the environment. We request that parents ensure bottles are washed every evening and returned to school the next day.
Children under the age of five receive free milk every day. Parents can also buy subsidised milk for children once they pass their fifth birthday by ordering it directly from the dairy.
Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 receive free fruit at break time.
All pupils can take advantage of our healthy tuck shop or they can bring healthy snacks from home.
